Why Your Brakes Might be Squeaking

A lot of drivers feel bothered when their brakes start squeaking. After all, they depend on their brakes to keep them safe. An unusual sound can be a sign that something is wrong, leading most drivers to respond immediately. Sometimes, there are completely normal reasons why brakes squeak. Other times, squeaking brakes require an immediate response. Consider the circumstances before you hit the panic button.

There’s Debris in Your Brakes

Cars get dirty. This means they’re susceptible to the buildup of dirt, sand, dust, and other debris. You probably wash the exterior of your car when it appears dirty and vacuum out the upholstery. You likely don't think to clean out your car’s inner workings. Junk getting caught up in your brakes can cause a squeaking sound. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s anything wrong with your brakes – they just might need a thorough cleaning.

Weather Conditions are Affecting Your Breaks

The elements can take a toll on your brakes. On a cold day, it’s normal for brakes to squeak. Cold temperatures cause all materials, including metal, to contract. This tightness can lead to a squeaking or squealing sound that may persist until your brakes warm up.

Water can begin to form rust on your brakes. Driving in high water, heavy rain, or snow can introduce water to your brakes. Most of the time, the thin layer of rust will begin to crumble away as soon as you begin driving. If the issue is persistent or the car hasn’t been driven for a long time, this rust damage may be harder to combat.

Your Brake Pads Need to Be Replaced

Brakes that have been squeaking for a long time are cause for concern. Different brake pads and different cars have specification for replacement. Some cars will need their brake pads replaced after about 25,000 miles. Others can exceed 70,000 miles without requiring replacement. You can refer to your car’s manual or the paperwork from your last visit to the auto shop to see if you’re due for a replacement. Even if it’s not technically time, damage, city driving, or unusual circumstances may require your brake pads be changed sooner.

Why Your Brakes Squeak

The only way to know for sure is to bring your car to the shop. An expert will be able to determine the cause of the sound, whether it’s simple or indicative of a larger problem. Don’t take chances with your safety if your brakes have been squeaking for a long time – get a professional opinion.
