Why winter tires?
All season tires
are designed to provide acceptable levels of performance under a variety
of conditions. They are primarily designed for wet and dry weather
traction, long mileage, fuel economy, handling and comfort. While
all-season tires provide a good compromise of
performance for the spring, summer and fall months, they are less
effective in winter's freezing temperatures. In a snow tire,
winter traction is the first priority of design. To battle the snow, ice and cold
temperatures of winter driving, a snow tire requires different rubber
compounds; tread design and other unique features that are unacceptable
for use in an all season tire.
Vehicles with traction
control and ABS brakes:
It's important to
note that the advancements in electronic driver aids, such as ABS and
traction control don't provide more traction. They only help prevent
drivers from over braking or overpowering the available traction of
their tires. The only thing that will actually increase grip and control
is a better set of tires.
Vehicles with all-wheel drive:
The advantage of all-wheel drive can be multiplied by using winter tires
designed for the weather conditions you'll encounter. The reasons
for selecting an all-wheel drive vehicle are the same reasons that
dedicated winter tires will make winter driving more enjoyable as well
as enhancing the vehicle's braking, handling and cornering traits..
